God gave three sets of laws to the people of Israel.
The Ten Commandments (Ex. 20) are the greater laws. Known as the judicial or moral laws, they were given for all people, to always keep. They are the rules that teach man how to do what is right for God and to others. The lesser laws such as those that teach honesty and helping those less fortunate (Ex. 23:1-9) are an extension of those written in stone and are also still to be kept. Given to govern the children of Israel, the civil laws applied specifically to Israel as a country and as a nation (Ex. 21-22). They were used for the purpose of settling those such as personal and property
rights (Ex. 21-22). The food laws specified what types of food they were allowed to eat (Ex. 11).
The sacrificial laws such as found throughout the book of Leviticus were fulfilled by Christ. The following pages discusses the Mosaic laws and how to keep them. |
